DUNKELD, VIC | GARIWERD LAND
MT STURGEON HOMESTEAD
Mount Sturgeon Homestead is a spectacular 1800s colonial house set on a working farm on the edge of Dunkeld, with sweeping views of Wurgarri (Mount Sturgeon).
Part of the Royal Mail Hotel, the Homestead is undergoing a rejuvenation that honours place and history while enhancing comfort for guests.
The brief for the Sitting Room was to transform the space into a welcoming retreat that celebrates the surrounding landscape.
The colour and material palette draws on local context and historic materiality — from the dusk light on Wurgarri to the homestead’s quarried stone and rich farming heritage — resulting in a base of stony blues, straw-like neutrals and deep greens that put guests instantly at ease.
The formal sitting room invites guests to congregate together or find a corner quiet to curl up with a book.
Materiality and colours hark back to the bush and farm surrounds. Stoney blues, earthy clays, grass like warm neutrals and rich greens connect effortlessly to the environment.
The deep set sofa is upholstered in a rich golden fabric references a particular point on the mountain that glows when the light hits it ‘just so’ in the evening.
Furnishings have been sourced from Australian makers and artisans providing an opportunity to customise pieces specifically to the space.
A wall of green greets you beyond the doors where Wurgarri rises just meters from the veranda.
